It is one of the most important places of Marian devotion and for hundreds of years it has been a fundamental destination of pilgrimages in Poland. There is the miraculous painting of Holy Mary in Czestochowa, called the Black Madonna. The place acquired special significance principally in 1655, during the Polish – Swedish War, known as the ‘Swedish Deluge’. People then believed that this miraculous picture saved Poland from the Swedish attack.
Birthplace of the Polish Pope – John Paul II. Tourists can visit the home of Karol Wojtyla, which has been turned into a biographic museum of the Pope. Nearby is situated the Church of the Offering of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is also John Paul II Square with neo-classical buildings from the nineteenth-century. In 2006 a statue of the Polish Pope was set there.John Paul II visited Wadowice three times, in 1979, 1991 and in 1999.
